Homecoming King and Queen

Good morning readers! I woke up bright and early this Sunday morning but I'm still trying to wake up. I had to snooze my alarm clock a couple of times and hopefully my espresso shot will kick in soon. I wanted to share a blast from the past memory that was on my mind this morning...

When I was a senior in high school there was a popular, happy looking couple in my grade who everyone admired. Every time I saw them they were smiling and just looked giddy and in love, especially the guy. He always looked so genuinely friendly and always took the time to say hello to everyone. He and his girlfriend were our homecoming king and queen. Admittedly, I was a little envious of their relationship. I thought it was great to find your other half in high school. As a freshman in college, I ran into the homecoming queen. We were both in line for coffee and she looked amazing and was practically glowing; I didn't remember her having that glow in high school. We started chatting and I asked her how her boyfriend was doing and she responded with "we broke up shortly after graduating high school." I was shocked and stated that they looked so happy together. Well, it turned out that she was very unhappy in the relationship. Her exboyfriend used to always put her down when no one was around. For example, he'd always criticize, in private, what she said to their friends and would ask her why she said what she said, which always made her second guess herself and lower her self-esteem.  She said she felt free and happy now that she was single. It then made more sense to me why she had that glow about her - she was glowing with confidence and freedom. That experience taught me to never again envy people's relationship and to be happy with what I had.
